Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Commercial Drivers – Diagnosis and Treatment Training Course for Medical Examiners
This training program provides the tools you need to identify drivers whose OSA puts them at increased risk for crashes. By taking our medical examiner training, you will also gain an understanding of treatment options and how to diagnose sleep apnea in commercial drivers.
Many studies have shown that Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, is a significant cause of motor vehicle crashes. Out of a sampling of 593 long-distance truck drivers, 47.1 had fallen asleep at the wheel at least once, and 25.4 within the last year. And, according to recent estimates, nearly one in three commercial drivers suffers from some degree of OSA.
It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, with 80 percent of the cases of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea undiagnosed.
This course will help explain the guidance issued by the DOT FMCSA for examiners to use their judgment to detect, suggest treatment options and provide certification options for commercial drivers who have been identified with OSA.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and their Medical Review Board, have made recommendations and guidelines for mandatory screening. Stay ahead of the curve with our new OSA training course.

Unfortunately, there is not a current rule or Advisory Criteria/Guidance from the FMCSA specifically on OSA. Until a final rule is approved by the FMCSA, examiners will still be expected to use their best judgment to certify that commercial motor vehicle drivers are medically qualified to operate a CVM under 291.41 (b) (5).
